Systems matter more than features
Features are easy to list and easy to copy. What separates technology that lasts from technology that doesn't is everything underneath: the architecture, the failure modes, the operational discipline.
- Architecture first. The expensive mistakes are the ones made before the first line of code.
- Built to be operated. Software that can't be monitored, patched and recovered isn't finished.
- Reliability is a design property. Failure modes are decided on paper, not discovered in production.
- Simplicity over novelty. We choose proven technology and spend the complexity budget only where it earns something.
